AI for marketing
AI for marketing means using generative and analytical AI tools inside the work marketers already do: research, content drafts, campaign planning, reporting and email. For marketers, the useful question is not which tool is cleverest but which tasks get faster without weakening claims, brand voice or compliance.
This guide covers the main use cases across content, campaigns, analytics and email, the UK rules that still apply when AI does the drafting, and how a team turns scattered experiments into a shared, reviewed way of working.
Leave with a short list of marketing tasks worth trying first, the UK rules each one touches, and a review step your team can apply to every AI-assisted output.
The ASA (29 May 2025) says the CAP and BCAP Codes apply in the same way whether or not AI is used, there is no general UK legal requirement to disclose AI in ads, and disclosure generally cannot cure a misleading ad. ASA: Disclosure of AI in advertising ↗
ICO guidance covers AI accountability, transparency and fairness; the guidance is currently under review. ICO: AI and data protection guidance ↗

where does AI for marketing actually help?
It helps most with first drafts, research preparation, variation and summarising, and least with judgement about claims, positioning and audience.
The strongest early uses of AI for marketing are tasks with a clear input and a reviewable output: turning a briefing note into a draft blog outline, producing several subject lines from one approved message, or summarising customer interview notes into themes.
Digital marketing teams also use it to restructure existing material for different channels, such as cutting a long article into social posts or rewriting a landing page section for a different segment, with a person checking each version.
It is weaker where the work depends on facts the model does not have: product claims, pricing, legal wording, competitor comparisons and anything that must be true on the day it is published.
A practical starting rule is that AI may draft and suggest, while a named person approves anything that leaves the building.
Start with drafting and summarising tasks.
Keep facts and claims tied to approved sources.
Name the person who approves each output.

how do marketers use AI for content without losing the brand?
Give the tool your approved source material and voice guidance, and review every draft against both before it is used.
Generic prompts produce generic copy. Content quality improves when marketers supply the brief, the approved product facts, examples of on-brand writing and a list of phrases the brand does not use.
The draft is then treated as a starting point. An editor checks tone, removes unsupported statements and confirms that every claim can be traced to a source the business is willing to stand behind.
Teams that work this way usually keep a shared library of prompts and source packs for recurring jobs, so quality does not depend on one enthusiastic individual.
Our AI marketing training for teams is built around exactly this workflow: source pack, draft, claims check and normal approval route.

what about campaigns, analytics and email?
AI for marketing can speed up campaign planning, reporting summaries and email variation, but data handling and measurement rules stay the same.
For campaigns, AI is useful for structuring a plan, generating creative routes to test and checking a brief for gaps. It does not know your budget constraints or past results unless you give it that information, so treat its plans as drafts.
For analytics, assistants can explain a report, draft a commentary or suggest questions to ask of the data. Any number that goes into a board pack still needs to come from the source system, not from the assistant's summary.
Email is a common entry point because drafts and variants are easy to compare. The detail, including consent and deliverability, is covered in our guide to AI for email marketing.
Before connecting customer data to any assistant, check how the vendor handles it. Microsoft, for example, states that Microsoft 365 Copilot prompts and responses are not used to train its foundation models and that Copilot only surfaces data a user already has permission to see.
| Check | What to establish |
|---|---|
| 1 | Treat AI campaign plans as drafts. |
| 2 | Take reported numbers from the source system. |
| 3 | Check vendor data terms before connecting customer data. |

do UK advertising rules apply to AI-generated content?
Yes. The ASA says the CAP and BCAP Codes apply in the same way whether or not AI was used to make an ad.
The Advertising Standards Authority's article on disclosure of AI in advertising states that the codes have no AI-specific rules, but the existing rules apply however content is created, edited or targeted.
The same article says there is no general UK legal requirement to disclose AI use in ads. Instead, the ASA suggests asking whether the audience would be misled without a disclosure, and whether a disclosure would clarify or contradict the message.
Importantly, the ASA says a disclosure generally cannot cure a misleading ad. An AI-generated image that exaggerates a product's results is still misleading even with a label saying AI was used.
For marketers, that makes AI for marketing a claims-substantiation question first and a labelling question second.

what data protection and copyright points should we check?
Check the lawful basis and PECR rules for any personal data or electronic marketing, and treat copyright in AI outputs and inputs as unsettled.
Personal data used in prompts, segmentation or personalisation is still subject to UK GDPR. The ICO's guidance on AI and data protection covers accountability, transparency and fairness, and the ICO notes it is under review following the Data (Use and Access) Act.
Electronic marketing also falls under PECR. The ICO's guidance on complying with the PECR electronic mail marketing rules sets out consent, the soft opt-in and the identity and opt-out requirements that apply whoever, or whatever, wrote the message.
Copyright is less settled. The UK government's consultation on copyright and artificial intelligence covered AI training on copyright works and protection for computer-generated works; it has closed, and the page says the government is analysing feedback.
Until the position is clearer, keep records of the sources and assets you supply to tools, avoid prompting for imitations of identifiable creators' work, and check vendor terms on output ownership.
Apply UK GDPR to personal data in prompts.
Apply PECR to every electronic marketing message.
Keep records of inputs while copyright is unsettled.

how do we move from experiments to a team habit?
Pick two or three recurring tasks, agree the review step for each, and train the team on its own work rather than generic demos.
Most marketing teams already have individuals using AI informally. The risk is inconsistency: different tools, different data habits and no agreed check before publication.
A short written policy helps; our AI policy template is a starting point for approved tools, data rules and review responsibilities.
Training then works best on the team's own briefs, assets and channels. That is the difference between training people to use AI well and training a model, which most marketing teams do not need to do at all.
When you want help applying AI for marketing across your own team, start with AI marketing training for teams or contact us with the two tasks you most want to improve.
Choose a small number of recurring tasks.
Write down tools, data rules and review steps.
Train on the team's real work.
Make the decision concrete
What does the current task cost in time?
Choose a task connected to ai for marketing and enter its current workload. This gives you a baseline to discuss before buying training or commissioning a build.
A baseline is useful even if you decide to keep the process manual. Measure the work that matters, then compare quality and review effort as well as time.
Assess the workflow before changing it, or plan business AI training if the gap is how people use existing tools.
Your current workload
Estimate how much time the existing task takes before discussing ai for marketing.
16 hours per week
People × minutes × weekly tasks ÷ 60. A workload baseline from your inputs, not a prediction of AI time savings. Include review and support time when comparing a proposed workflow.
A useful AI investment leaves your team able to do the work and judge the result.
